Mladá Boleslav, November 18, 2010 – Czech engineering for a Volkswagen plant in Russia: six new, powerful welding systems made by Škoda have been fully handed over to the Kaluga automobile plant. Built by the tool-making division of the largest Czech automobile manufacturer, the highly complex welding line for the production of car body parts is one-of-a-kind: It produces six body parts each for three different car models. This proves once more the high competence and strong position of the Škoda tool-making division within in the Volkswagen Group.

"For 110 years now, the tool-making of Škoda Auto has been standing for technical perfection and engineering of the highest quality. The new systems for Kaluga are an expression of this competence. They underscore the importance of Škoda and its vehicle manufacturing for the growth strategy of the brand and the entire Volkswagen Group," emphasized Michael Oeljeklaus, Škoda Auto BOD Member for Production and Logistics.

The six welding systems are capable of producing the body parts for the four front and rear side doors, the hatch door, and the engine hood. And they do so for three models at the same time: The Škoda Fabia, Volkswagen Tiguan, and Volkswagen Polo.

Volkswagen's tool-making division, acting as the general supplier for the production of car bodies at the plant in Kaluga, placed the order for the new systems with the tool-making division in Mladá Boleslav in the spring of 2008. Škoda engineers and toolmakers designed and built the systems already the same year. The complete operational handover to the Russian plant took place at the end of September.

The automobile plant of the Volkswagen Group in the Russian town of Kaluga is a joint project by Škoda Auto and Volkswagen. It is conveniently located about 200 km south of Moscow in a highly developed industrial area.
