Mladá Boleslav/Stockholm, 20th May, 2013 – Sweden is the ice hockey world champion of 2013. The Swedish Team won the final of the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship 5:1 against Switzerland. Roman Josi from the Swiss team was named 'Most Valuable Player' in this year's World Championship. ŠKODA CEO, Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland presented Roman Josi with the trophy as part of the closing ceremony. This is the 21st time that ŠKODA has supported the championships as the main sponsor.
In front of a crowd of 12,500 at the sold out Stockholm Globe Arena, the Swedish national ice hockey team came out on top 5:1 against the team from Switzerland. It is the ninth title for the team of 'Three Crowns'. Previously, USA had secured themselves the Bronze Medal in the game against the Finish Team.
After the final, the ŠKODA CEO Winfried Vahland made a positive summary of ŠKODA's sponsorship this year, "In supporting this event, we are pleased that we could contribute to offering ice hockey fans great sport and many ice hockey superstars. It was a fantastic tournament with exciting games and a well-earned World Champion: Sweden. The 'Most Valuable Player' of this year's IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship was named Roman Josi. Professor Vahland presented Roman Josi with the trophy as part of the closing ceremony on the ice.
This is the 21st time that ŠKODA has supported the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship as the official main sponsor, thus making the Czech carmaker's commitment the longest main sponsorship in the history of sports world championships. This was officially recognized as a GUINNESS world record.
The new ŠKODA Octavia Combi played an integral role in this year's sponsorship. In time for the official market launch, 45 new Octavia Combis took officials and guests from A to B in style. The new edition of the 2012 European best-seller is to be launched on worldwide markets this month.
The Czech car manufacturer was more visible than ever before in Stockholm and Helsinki – With a fleet of 45 cars for officials and guests, the large logo in the centre of the rink, logo placement in the stands as well as the jerseys and helmets, events in the arenas and on the Internet, ŠKODA was right in the centre of this world championship.
With final TV ratings pending, more than 900 million people around the globe are expected to have watched the games of the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship and a total of 427,818 spectators visited the 64 games in the arenas in Stockholm and Helsinki.
The 2013 IIHF app powered by ŠKODA for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry gave worldwide users up-to-date information on the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship and was downloaded free of charge more than 280,000 times.
