Mladá Boleslav, 19 March 2013 – The ŠKODA Rapid has received one of the world's most coveted design awards as this compact saloon took the "red dot" design prize for product design. An expert jury annually awards this internationally recognised seal of quality for outstanding design in one of the world's largest design competitions, the "red dot design award". The ŠKODA Rapid is the sixth ŠKODA model line to be honoured with a "red dot".
Perfect proportions, clear and cleanly modelled surfaces and sharply drawn lines mark out the ŠKODA Rapid. In 2012, the Rapid became the first series ŠKODA to feature the brand's new design language. This design is clear, precise, fresh and emotional. Besides its distinctive appearance, the Rapid impresses with lots of space, an excellent price/value ratio, comprehensive safety equipment and efficient engines. This compact saloon sets standards in its class and boasts estate car qualities in its 550-litre boot and foldable rear seat back. The "red dot" award's jury, made up of 37 renowned design experts, has recognised these qualities. Every year, the jury inspects and tests the products submitted and assesses them according to criteria such as their level of innovation, functionality, ergonomics, longevity, ecological compatibility or to which degree they can be considered self-explanatory.
"The ŠKODA Design Team and I are very happy about this award. We have put lots of work and dedication into the development of the new ŠKODA design language, and the ŠKODA Rapid is our first series car to feature this new design," says Jozef Kabaň, head of design at ŠKODA AUTO a.s. "For us, this award is a great recognition of our effort."
The ŠKODA Octavia's all-new design is convincing all around. Never before has a ŠKODA Octavia's stance on the road been as dynamic and at the same time as timelessly elegant, distinctive, classy and as confident as in this bestseller's third generation. The new Octavia is an unmistakable face in the automobile crowd. In addition, the car features many clever features. The "red dot" jury found one detail solution to be particularly well designed and awarded it an "honourable mention," but the experts have yet to release specifics.
This year, 1,865 designers, architects and companies from 54 countries submitted a total of 4,662 products – more than ever before in the history of the red dot – to the jury's verdict. The 2013 "red dot" award's "product design" section comprised 19 different categories. The ŠKODA brand is well known to the experts. After all, in 2010, no less than two ŠKODA models, the ŠKODA Yeti and the ŠKODA Superb, won the "red dot." The ŠKODA Fabia had taken the prize in 2008, following the ŠKODA Roomster in 2007. The first ŠKODA to win over the judges (in 2006) and receive the "red dot" had been the popular Octavia Combi. This brings the number of the brand's models to be awarded the coveted distinction to six.
The "red dot design award" presentation ceremony will be held at the Aallto-Theater in Essen, Germany, on July 1st, 2013 and will feature a ŠKODA Rapid on display. From July 2nd through 28th, the "red dot design museum" in Essen will present all of the products honoured in a special edition called "Design on stage – winners red dot award: product design 2013."
