Mladá Boleslav, November 13th, 2012 – Testing operation of the ŠKODA Octavia Green E Line is about to enter a new phase with another renowned partner as TÜV SÜD Czech commissions an electric Octavia for a seven-month project involving consumption measurements and tests. ŠKODA expects these tests to provide important insight regarding electric propulsion's suitability for daily use and its ongoing improvement.

"Commissioning one of our ŠKODA Octavia Green E Line at TÜV SÜD Czech expands our cooperation," says Petr Kristl, electric mobility/electric traction development department head at ŠKODA AUTO. "We expect the tests to provide important insight into our e-vehicle's mileage behaviour."

As a provider of technical services and testing authority, TÜV SÜD has been a partner of ŠKODA AUTO for many years in certifying prototypes with various drive concepts. Under the E-Octavia project, TÜV SÜD will be using the car in everyday operation, performing, among others, consumption tests using standardised measurements based on TÜV's TSECC (TÜV SÜD e-Car Cycle) methodology, which TÜV SÜD developed specifically for determining the consumption of electric vehicles under real-life conditions. Thus, the methodology will explicitly take into account the behaviour of the car's air conditioning and heating as these and other electric components significantly affect an electric vehicle's range. Data generated in the test is to assist in making air conditioning etc. more efficient and thus contribute to e-cars becoming more suited for everyday driving.

A total of ten Octavia Green E Line is currently being tested with various partners. The cars, all of them white e-estates, have achieved a combined mileage of about 140,000 kilometres in everyday driving. TÜV SÜD is another renowned partner in the testing of the e-Octavia. So far, these cars have been in operation mainly with institutions and companies such as the administration of Prague Castle, energy producers ŠKO-ENERGO and energy distributors ČEZ, ŠkoFIN and University of Economics in Prague. In addition, a ŠKODA employee and his family have been using an electric car for private purposes since June. A second family will soon join them, ŠKODA's Facebook page www.facebook.com/skoda.cz having organized a content for "innovative families" outside the company to test the car for a period of six months. The content ended on November 7th.

All ŠKODA Octavia Green E Line are fitted with special sensors enabling continuous monitoring of important vehicle parameters such as traction, regenerative and comfort energy, use of drive modes, acceleration or the car's position in time. All data is automatically transmitted via UMTS to specialists at ŠKODA AUTO's technical development, permitting to analyse the use of the electric car and realistic load of the electric system in operation. Also, the data will show how recharging the batteries affects their service life.

The ŠKODA Octavia Green E Line is based on the ŠKODA Octavia Combi. Its electric motor puts out up to 85 kW and will accelerate the car from 0 to 100 kph in only 12 seconds. Top speed is 135 kph. Powering the car is a lithium-ion battery requiring about two-and-a-half hours to charge. At full charge, the E Octavia has a range of up to 150 kilometres, fulfilling the needs of most European commuters.

ŠKODA's activities in the field of electric mobility are an important element of its broad-based drive and fuel strategy. This includes is continuous refinement of its highly efficient TDI and TSI engines, for which ŠKODA AUTO is currently building a new power plant testing centre in Mladá Boleslav, which will also serve for testing drives using different fuel varieties.
