Salou, Spain, 27 October 2013 – Bad luck for ŠKODA driver Sepp Wiegand: the promising German driver had to retire on the final day of Rally Spain, just when a podium finish was within reach. He was in a fantastic second place in the WRC 2 category when he was forced to pull out due to a technical problem during the 13th of the 15 special stages in the penultimate rally of the current FIA World Rally Championship (WRC).

"Obviously, it's frustrating. We were doing really well and I was really enjoying driving. But we did at least show we can be competitive on both asphalt and gravel," Wiegand said. The 22-year-old and his co-driver Frank Christian initially defended the second place they had secured on asphalt during the first three stages on Sunday on his favourite track surface, gravel.

Dealing with difficult visibility, Wiegand was significantly faster than the Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica (Poland) on the Gandesa, Peselis and Terra Alta special stages. But Kubica ultimately won the rally and has therefore also claimed the WRC 2 title before the end of the season. ŠKODA Motorsport congratulates Robert Kubica on this achievement! Congratulations also go to Volkswagen for clinching the WRC Manufacturers' Championship title.
