Ajaccio, 17 May, 2013 – Half way through the Corsica Rally, ŠKODA's driver duo Jan Kopecký/Pavel Dresler (CZ/CZ) is in the lead, despite the sometimes slippery asphalt making the driving conditions challenging. The pair clinched the top spot by winning the last special stage.

The first day of the asphalt rally hosted on the Mediterranean island of Corsica, which is now in its 56th year and which is considered to be one of the highlights of the FIA European Rally Championship (ERC), was full of excitement. A key factor was the weather at the foot of the snow-capped mountains, with the day being marked by isolated showers.

The six special stages on the bendy and sometimes wet course posed quite a challenge both for the drivers and their machines. But the ŠKODA Fabia S2000 and Kopecký managed to overcome all the obstacles. The Czech driver has a comfortable lead in the ERC overall rankings after scoring three victories in three events. Last year, he came second in Corsica.

"It's been a great day, but we have another tough day ahead of us," said Jan Kopecký. Before winning the final stage, he came twice second, finished in third place once and scored two fourth places, making him the most consistent driver once again. "It was difficult today because of the new tyre regulations. We did a fair bit of technical tweaking and managed to get everything tuned perfectly for the final stage."

The drivers face a further 109.65 timed kilometres spread over five stretches on Saturday at the fifth European Rally Championship event of the season, before the Corsica Rally finishes in Ajaccio in the evening. There will again be live and recorded broadcasts of the Corsica Rally on Saturday, on the TV channel Eurosport.
