Mladá Boleslav, June 13th, 2012 – May 2012 saw ŠKODA AUTO achieve new highs in vehicle deliveries to customers. Worldwide, the brand's sales rose 4.3 per cent as against May 2011 to almost 81,500. This is a new May high. Over the first five months of 2012, ŠKODA AUTO delivered over 405,500 cars to customers, up 8.6 per cent. This is a record in itself as compared to the corresponding period of last year, which saw a total of around 373,400 deliveries.

ŠKODA achieved high sales advances in India and China, two markets renowned for their growth, but the brand also remained successful in Eastern and Central Europe, as it has been over the past months. In the first five months of 2012, ŠKODA delivered over 405,500 cars to customers worldwide, a year-on-year rise of 8.6 per cent and the first time the brand topped 400,000 deliveries before the year's first five months were out.

"Despite increasingly difficult conditions in Western Europe, May 2012 was another month in which ŠKODA AUTO managed to increase its deliveries worldwide year on year," said Jürgen Stackmann, Škoda board member for sales and marketing. "Economic headwinds are going to be felt in many markets in the months ahead," he said. Lately, ŠKODA's sales growth has been fuelled mainly by China, Central and Eastern Europe and India, leading to the highest May delivery figures ever. "The ŠKODA Citigo's sales start, which we have just seen, will provide us with additional momentum over the weeks ahead. Also, the launch of the Rapid in autumn means another model is waiting behind the starting gate," Stackmann said.

In the highly competitive and in part strongly shrinking markets in Western Europe, preliminary estimates show overall car sales sank by about ten per cent in May 2012. All Western European markets were down except for Great Britain. ŠKODA's deliveries in the area declined correspondingly, totalling close to 31,000 (May 2011: 34,400). The brand outperformed the market in Great Britain with sales up 9.4 per cent as against an expected overall growth in the British market of around two per cent. As in past months, ŠKODA's bestselling models in Western Europe in May 2012 were the ŠKODA Octavia, selling over 10,200 units, and the ŠKODA Fabia which sold almost 9,400.

ŠKODA AUTO was sharply up in Eastern Europe as it has been in the past months, with sales rising 28.6 per cent to 12,100 units in May 2012 (May 2011: 9,400). In Russia alone, the brand sold almost 8,500 cars (May 2011: 6,100), up 37.6 per cent year on year, the most popular model on the Russian market being the ŠKODA Octavia, which sold 4,500 units (May 2011: 3,000) for a plus of 48.5 per cent. Sales of the ŠKODA Yeti compact SUV were up 65 per cent to almost 1,200. The ŠKODA Superb advanced almost 122 per cent to just under 500 units. ŠKODA AUTO also saw growth elsewhere in Eastern Europe in May 2012 with sales rising 44.4 per cent to more than 1,400 units in Ukraine (May 2011: 1,000).

In Eastern Central Europe ŠKODA AUTO's deliveries rose slightly in May 2012. Sales were up 0.7 per cent to almost 10,800 (May 2011: 10,700). In the Czech Republic, the brand's home market, deliveries to customers rose 8.1 per cent to around 5,200 (May 2011: 4,800). ŠKODA advanced 32.2 per cent to about 400 cars sold in Slovenia. The brand's most popular model in the region was the Octavia, as it has been, selling almost 4,600 units. Models that posted year on year growth included the ŠKODA Roomster (more than 800 units sold; up 22.2 per cent), the ŠKODA Superb (more than 800 sold; up 0.4 per cent) and the ŠKODA Yeti (more than 700 sold; up 7.8 per cent).

In China, ŠKODA AUTO grew by 13.1 per cent in May 2012. Deliveries to customers topped 21,000 (May 2011: 18,600). Since 2010, China has been the brand's no. 1 market by sales worldwide. In the first five months of 2012, ŠKODA deliveries topped 100,000 for the first time, amounting to exactly 100,600, up eight per cent. The brand's most popular models in China in May 2012 were the ŠKODA Octavia (13,500 sold; up 29.3 per cent) and the ŠKODA Fabia (3,800 sold, up 1.1 per cent).
