Mladá Boleslav, 6 August 2013 – The ŠKODA Citigo CNG proves its class with a record result:  fuel-saving champion Gerhard Plattner drove 2,619 km across Europe in the environmentally friendly natural gas ŠKODA. On the route from Vicenza, Italy to the Swedish capital, Stockholm, the average consumption of the ŠKODA Citigo CNG was 2.39 kg natural gas per 100 km – equating to more than 0.5 kg under the manufacturer's specification of 2.9 kg/100 km in the NEDC mix.

"With this result, we have shown what can be achieved with good concepts, intensive development and ongoing technical optimization. Together with attractive design of the ŠKODA Citigo, its light weight and low ground air resistance. Thus, the ŠKODA Citigo CNG better record," says Dr. Frank Welsch, Board Member for Development at ŠKODA AUTO.

The ever-reliable ŠKODA Citigo CNG's all-time best results were recorded in the penultimate stage of the five-day tour across nine European countries: Plattner squeezed an amazing average consumption of 2.04 kg per 100km (96 MPG) on this 515 km stretch.  The Austrian praised his economical companion, "as a real all-rounder for the long-haul who's never let me down, and an incredibly comfortable ride." Plattner is convinced, "the Citigo can even cover long distances well. The four-door was a lot of fun."

Plattner concludes: "Even though I knew the Citigo CNG was extremely economical, I hadn't expected such a result.  I undercut the norm consumption by almost 18%. Three-litre cars may emit a maximum of 90 g of CO2 per kilometre. Then I come along in my Citigo with an average of 65 g of CO2 – that's 28 % less. As such, the ŠKODA Citigo CNG is the first two-litre car," he added with a smile.

Plattner has been pleased with the ever-growing network of natural gas fuelling stations since the time he was preparing for this record journey. "I was able to cut around 100km of refuelling detours off the planned 2,714 km, and on my budget of 100 EUR I could have travelled a few hundred kilometres further," Plattner comments of the availability of fuel. There are an increasing number of CNG fuelling stations across Europe, and refuelling is no longer an issue.

For five days, extreme driver Plattner was on the road from Vicenza to Stockholm – through a total of nine countries, from Italy over Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Germany and Denmark on to Sweden.  It was a tour of superlatives in which he had sweltering heat in Italy, storms in Austria and by no means only the motorway. The ŠKODA Citigo CNG pulled off the feat perfectly. At the end of his European tour, Plattner still had 18.76 EUR left out of a 100 EUR fuel budget. Thus, the Czech brand underlines their claim of producing especially efficient models, perfect for everyday life.

The ŠKODA Citigo CNG, the car that made this record journey a resounding success, can be seen this September on the Natural Gas Stand at the IAA in Frankfurt.
