Mladá Boleslav, 29 July 2013 – More than 2700 kilometres across Europe – the economical ŠKODA Citigo CNG makes a confident record attempt. Today in Vicenza, Italy, fuel-saving world champion Gerhard Plattner began his one-week tour with the popular ŠKODA model from northern Italy to Scandinavia. His goal: to reach the Swedish capital Stockholm with the natural gas-powered Citigo on a budget of less than 100EUR. So Plattner has to try to drive the efficient ŠKODA Citigo CNG as environmentally consciously and economically as possible.
There have already been so many record drives. From Alaska to Tierra del Fuego and 13 Alpine laps in 24 hours – Gerhard Plattner has already done almost everything that a driver could possibly imagine. Now he is looking for another challenge: he is to come up against nine European countries (more than 2700 km) in one week – with no more than 100 EUR in fuel for the natural gas ŠKODA. "The special attraction for me primarily lies in the seemingly impossible feat of such economical travel – and, of course, also in the route. I am well prepared for all possible eventualities" says Plattner in light of the road ahead.
On his way from Italy to Scandinavia, the record-breaking driver will be making stops at stations in Austria, Hungary amongst others in his ŠKODA Citigo CNG. In Bratislava, Slovakia, ŠKODA's successful small car has been on sale since 2011, where so far 55,400 ŠKODA Citigos have been delivered to customers. Next, the purely gas-driven car will pass through the Czech capital, Prague, to the ŠKODA headquarters in Mladá Boleslav, and from there he will continue onto Poland through Berlin. "The arrival at the Sony Center will be one of the highlights of the week-long trip," says Plattner.
This Friday, 2nd August, he wishes to then finish the record run through Denmark into the Swedish capital of Stockholm and he will have proved that the natural gas technology in the ŠKODA Citigo is not only efficient but also cost effective. Tomorrow, Tuesday, Plattner starts the stage from Vienna, Austria, through Hungary and Slovakia to the Czech ŠKODA headquarters in Mladá Boleslav.
Plattner has travelled literally thousands of miles on his unusual fuel-saving trips and fuel efficiency records in many parts of the world. In the Guinness Book of World Records, Plattner is dubbed as "the most versatile driver in the world". This is not the first time that Plattner has driven for SKODA, and he has been presented with several efficiency records with products from the successful Czech brand. Low fuel consumption and low emissions characterize the entire ŠKODA model range. Back in 2005 he travelled 18,000 kilometres across Europe in a ŠKODA Fabia, crossing 31 countries. At that time he only had 1,000 euros fuel for the whole trip. In May, 2011, Plattner managed to get from Austria to Denmark - and back again on a single tank in his ŠKODA Fabia GreenLine - 2006 kilometres on a full tank corresponding to an average consumption of 2.21 litres per 100 kilometres.
Now the Austrian wishes to set a new efficiency record with the ŠKODA Citigo CNG, whereby he will travel as economically as possible using natural gas from Vicenza to Stockholm. What motivates someone to take on such an extraordinary experiment? "I want to prove that it is possible to drive ecumenically not only under ideal conditions on an enclosed test circuit. Under certain conditions and even on winter roads, a ŠKODA can be driven with less than standard fuel consumption," says Plattner.
