Strong focus on environmental protection and social responsibility
Further reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions across Škoda's portfolio of vehicles
Water consumption per car produced is about 60 percent lower as compared with the figure of 1999
Mladá Boleslav, 1 October 2010 - Škoda Auto has issued its 2009/2010 Sustainability Report. The document presents all activities of the Czech Republic's largest car manufacturer that involve environmental protection and social responsibility. Relevant indicators have been used to explain the extent to which pollutant emission volumes have been reduced across the product portfolio and by how much Škoda has managed to cut energy consumption in its manufacturing operations. Furthermore, the Report highlights the company's social engagement projects and provides information about the growth of Škoda's subsidiaries in the field of sustainable development. Using this form, Škoda has been informing the public of its achievements once every two years since 2005.
Škoda Auto has made some massive improvements in its car manufacturing operations. Water consumption per car produced has fallen by about 60 percent over 1999 – 2009 (from 6.3 cubic meters to just 2.5 cubic meters) and wastewater production per car produced has dropped even more, by nearly 70 percent (from 6.2 cubic meters to 2.0 cubic meters). Furthermore, the company has dramatically reduced the quantity of waste (metals not included) – in contrast with 95 kg of waste per car produced that Škoda used to generate ten years ago, the figure of 2009 is only 37 kg.
Škoda Auto BOD Chairman Prof. Winfried Vahland has stressed that sustainable development is one of the company's core focus areas. The best examples of this strategy are the successful GreenLine models, i.e. vehicles boasting extremely low fuel consumption and CO2 emission figures. With just 109 g of CO2/km, the compact MPV Roomster GreenLine is a leader in its class, and with 4.2 litres/100 km, this car has the lowest fuel consumption in the MPV category. Škoda's new Yeti GreenLine shows that even SUVs can be economical and environmentally friendly – 119 g of CO2/km is the lowest figure in the SUV segment, and the car's consumption is only 4.6 litres/100 km. Furthermore, the Octavia Green E Line concept presented at the Paris Motor Show gives a clear signal that Škoda Auto's investments in environmentally friendly vehicles are indeed massive. "Despite all the environmental improvements we have made so far, we are not resting on laurels. On the contrary – we carry on heading towards the emission-free future", said Dr. Vahland.
Produced with environmental protection in mind, the Report is printed exclusively on recycled paper. The Sustainability Report is downloadable from http://new.skoda-auto.com/company/com/sustainable_development.
