Mladá Boleslav, 25 August, 2011 - MAs of a few days ago, a ŠKODA is the fastest fastest 2.0-litre forced induction production car in the world, sporting a charged engine with a 2 liters displacement. At 365 kilometers per hour or 227.080 miles per hour, the Octavia vRS Bonneville Special model achieved the new record in the course of high-speed drives in the American salt desert at Bonneville in the U.S. state of Utah. Only a few days after the vehicle had exceeded the 200 mile speed threshold on the same track, the 600 hp strong ŠKODA racer reached the new record on August 19, 2011, at 7:45 a.m. local time. The occasion for the drives was the ten year anniversary of the ŠKODA vRS models.
The previous speed record in the category "G/PS" had been 347 kilometers per hour or 216 miles per hour and dated back to the year 1998. After 13 years, the Czech brand has now been able to exceed this value by 18 kph or 11 mph. The Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) officially recognized the new record. The car was driven by Briton Richard Meaden as part of the Bonneville Speed Week (August 13 – 20, 2011). In an impressive manner, Meaden was able to accelerate the Octavia a total of six times to more than 200 miles per hour on the five kilometer long track.
Hence, Robert Hazelwood, the director of ŠKODA UK, was more than satisfied: "This is a truly stunning achievement. Our goal was to break 200 mph as a celebration of 10 years of vRS, and we have achieved that, and significantly more. The success is a tribute to everyone who has worked so tirelessly and with such passion to make ŠKODA a world beater."
