Full marks: five-star rating for Citigo

Kategorie: CITIGO

Mladá Boleslav, November 24th 2011 – ŠKODA's Citigo subcompact car has been awarded the highest possible score of five stars by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). Euro NCAP's top rating commends the Citigo's overall package including passenger protection, infant protection, pedestrian safety and safety assistance systems. Together with the VW Up! and the Seat Mii, the Citigo is the first subcompact ever to receive a five-star rating.

"This excellent five-star rating confirms the Citigo's high level of safety," says Dr.-Ing. Eckhard Scholz, ŠKODA board member in charge of technical development. "The development team has done outstanding work and it has proved that affordable, yet uncompromising safety is achievable even in the subcompact segment. The award by Euro NCAP is deserved praise for this great dedication."

The Citigo did very well in passenger protection. This involved assessment of crash safety in frontal and side collisions, the pole test and the so-called whiplash test. Whiplash tests measure strain on the upper cervical spine caused by a rear-end impact. Infant security was another area where the Citigo achieved excellent results. The car received full marks in tests simulating the protection of a three-year old child.

Euro NCAP testers also found the level of the Citigo's assistance systems convincing. In particular, they praised belt-fastening reminders as standard equipment on all seats and the ESP (electronic stability programme) which is available as standard in many markets. The fact that head-thorax airbags come as standard also contributed to the car's favourable Euro NCAP rating.

Overall, the Citigo safety package is exemplary in its segment. One highlight in this respect is the new "City Safe Drive" active braking assistant. This optional emergency braking function for inner-city driving activates itself automatically at speeds of less than 30 kph. Depending on speed and the relevant traffic situation, the automatic actuation of the brakes can mitigate a crash or prevent it altogether. Together with the Up! and the Seat Mii, the Citigo is the first car in the subcompact segment to offer this emergency braking function.
