Mladá Boleslav, 30 March 2014 – ŠKODA has taken part in the 'Earth Hour' environmental campaign for the second time. As part of the global WWF community campaign, on 29 March 2014 the lights went out for an hour at 20:30. The aim of 'Earth Hour' is to increase environmental awareness around the world.
The 'Earth Hour' campaign was established in 2007 by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), one of the largest international conservation organizations. Switching off the logo lights on corporate buildings for 60 minutes aims to increase awareness of energy usage and strengthen the idea of environmental protection.
Thousands of cities in more than 150 countries took part in the 'Earth Hour' at the end of March 2013. World-famous attractions including the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Prague's Charles Bridge, the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen and Michelangelo's David statue in Florence among many others were in the dark. Even companies like ŠKODA and thousands of private households took part.
Last Saturday ŠKODA turned off the lights at 18 locations for one hour. At ŠKODA headquarters in Mladá Boleslav, the lights went out at factory gates 8, 11 & 13, the Customer Centre, the Na Karmeli University and the Kosmonosy Service Centre. At the Vrchlabí and Kvasiny plants, the logos and the lights were turned off at the factory gates.
Sustainability and environmental protection are integral parts of the ŠKODA corporate strategy. First and foremost, the manufacturer produces fuel-efficient vehicles under the label 'GreenLine' or with selected 'Green tec' technologies, which can be found in the brand's portfolio. The manufacturer currently makes 97 models with emissions under 120g CO2/km, of which 17 with less than 100g CO2/km.
The environmentally-friendly natural gas engine is an important pillar of the sustainable model strategy. ŠKODA presented the ŠKODA Octavia G-TEC, the first Octavia powered by natural gas, at the Geneva Motor Show in early March. The engine is bivalent, i.e. natural gas and petrol. On CNG, consumption is 5.4 m3 (3.5 kg), corresponding to CO2 emissions of only 97 g/km. The ŠKODA Citigo G-TEC has been available since late 2011.
The manufacturer bundles all environmental measures under the umbrella of the 'Green Future' strategy. In addition to the development and construction of more efficient vehicles, there is a second focus on the economical use of resources in production. ŠKODA plans to make its own production 25% more environmentally-friendly by 2018. The third pillar of the 'Green Future' strategy is the environmental protection within the ŠKODA distribution network.
ŠKODA employees also participate in environmental protection in their free time: ŠKODA has planted a tree for every car sold in the Czech Republic since 2007. So far, around 423,000 new trees have been planted.
