Zlín, 1 September, 2012 – The Barum Czech Rally Zlín was dominated by ŠKODA Fabia Super 2000s on Day 1. The first three places are occupied by factory drivers of Fabia Super 2000s (1. Hänninen, 2. Kopecký, 3. Mikkelsen). the fourth and fifth places by Tomáš Kostka and Roman Kresta in private Fabia Super 2000s. Weather was a major factor throughout Leg 1.

The Barum Rally is typical of fast weather changes and this year seems to be no exception to this rule. Taking place in the surroundings of Zlín, the event showed its trickiness already in Friday´s super special stage: while Václav Pech in a Mini Cooper won, Pavel Valoušek in a Peugeot, another hot favourite for victory, had to give up. The right choice of tyres was the key factor on Saturday, because the track was showered by rain now and then and the drivers had to cope with a combination of dry and wet road stretches all day. Hänninen and Mikkelsen took turns in the lead in the morning, Jan Kopecký joined them in the afternoon to finish second after Day 1, 11 seconds behind leader Hänninen; losing a further 18 seconds, Mikkelsen is third.

Juho Hänninen: "The Barum Rally is showing again how tricky and difficult it really is. Tyre choice was the key factor today. We put in a focused performance, but tomorrow is a brand new day".

Jan Kopecký: "Today was like a see-saw - the weather was crazy, but I guess it´s one of the things that make this rally so unique. Nothing is clear yet, we are expecting a fierce battle on Sunday".

The Barum Czech Rally Zlín is part of three championships – the IRC, the European Championship and the Czech Championship. The event continues on Sunday with the final six stages (112 kilometres in total). For the first time in history, the rally is covered live by Eurosport and ČT4 (sports channel of the Czech Republic´s public service TV).
