Bad luck kills Lappi´s hopes at Monte Carlo Rally

Valence, 16 January, 2013 – Esapekka Lappi/Janne Ferm started their first appearance as ŠKODA Motorsport´s factory crew by winning Stage 1 of the WRC-2 category at the legendary Monte Carlo Rally. However, a defect on the front-left suspension meant a premature end in Stage 2.

Despite crashing into a rock and damaging their front-left suspension, Lappi & Ferm won Stage 1 (37 km), but the consequences of that defect stopped them in Stage 2 and they had to give up the whole event, because continuing under the "Super Rally" system is not possible this season.

Esapekka Lappi was visibly disappointed: "Considering the hard work put in by all the team members, we are so sorry about this outcome! For us this event ended before it actually started, and it is indeed a big disappointment, because we won Stage 1 and we felt really good, despite the mistake we´d made. However, we had to stop in Stage 2 due to the consequences of that collision. We had a completely different idea about the start to this season, but we will certainly do our best to make up for this failure at the next event."

The Monte Carlo Rally is the world´s oldest car race and one of the most difficult events. As usual, the difficult on-track conditions (mainly a combination of snow and ice) are a big challenge for both the teams and the technology. Taking place in the French Alps, this year´s event comprises 18 special stages (482 special-stage kilometres and 1,352 liaison kilometres). The Monte Carlo Rally ends on Sunday, 20 January, 2013.
